Rumors had been swirling that Brooklyn Dumpling Shop, a small local chain of dumpling fast-casual restaurants, had closed. The shop was closed up, and hadn’t been open, according to passersby. The Hoboken Girl team was finally able to contact the owners on May 7th, who shared the official update: the Brooklyn Dumpling Shop space has closed on Washington Street.

The Space

Over four years ago, there was a fire in the restaurant Dili Junction, and since then, the mid-Washington Street fast-casual spot had been closed.

In 2022, Brooklyn Dumpling Shop announced it was coming to the Mile Square, with its first location at 1st Avenue in Manhattan opening officially in spring of 2021. Before it even opened, however, the business announced it was expanding to a second location in Hoboken at 514 Washington Street.

The Hoboken location officially opened February of 2023. This outpost was owned + operated by Jersey City native Charles Tum-Baah, who is “excited to bring Brooklyn Dumpling Shop to Hoboken NJ,” per a press release. “Partnering with a franchise that has a household name like Brooklyn Dumpling Shop carries a prestige + subtle touch that compliments the Hoboken swagger.”

The Brooklyn Dumpling Shops — as a concept — were an automated experience. As a direct effect of COVID-19 and restaurants aiming to offer customers a contact-less free exchange, this company reinvented the concept, according to Charles.

All of the dumplings on the menu came in three per order and were inspired by classic diner dishes, including pastrami, Reuben, Philly cheesesteak, lamb “gyro,” turkey club, cheeseburger, chicken satay, peanut butter and jelly, chicken parm, pizza, and more.

The shop has already been shuttered, so there’s unfortunately no time left to get your dumpling fix here.
