Hoboken Roots

Back when Beatlemania was in full swing and Muhammad Ali was the Heavy Weight Champion of the World, three high school friends from Hoboken had an idea to open a neighborhood sandwich shop.

The friends knew their subs were the best around and didn’t want to settle for a name that undersold their high-quality sandwiches. After flipping through the dictionary for some inspiration they landed on a picture of a “blimp” and decided this was the best representation of their bigger + better sandwich.

The passionate trio brought their crave-worthy subs to the neighborhood on April 4th, 1964. Blimpie pioneered the customizable sandwich that is so popular in fast-food delis today.

“Blimpie holds a special place in the childhood memories of many because of its role as a go-to spot for fresh and delicious sandwiches since 1964. Family outings, school lunches, weekend treats. Blimpie was always there,” Vanessa said.
