Inclusion is an important part of creating a true community feel, and it’s something that the people of Jersey City not only understand at their roots but also promote on a regular basis. To put this philosophy into action, local non-profit Whole Spectrum Autism is inviting the community to step forward and participate in the 8th Annual Light the Month Blue event on Friday, April 7th, on the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Mall at 7:00PM. Keep reading to learn more about this local non-profit and their upcoming events happening in Jersey City.

April is Autism Acceptance Month

April is Autism Acceptance Month, and the Annual Light the Month Blue event supports Whole Spectrum Autism, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that’s on a mission to promote autism acceptance and inclusion by creating community engagement + serving as a voice for families whose loved ones are on the autism spectrum.

Everyone is invited to attend the autism flag raising on April 4th at City Hall in Jersey City, located at 280 Grove Street, at 1:30PM to officially kick off Autism Acceptance Month for the local community.

Then on Friday, April 7th, the Annual Light the Night Blue event will take place at the Newark Avenue Pedestrian Mall at 7:00PM — in which the pedestrian mall will be lit up blue. The event gives families with adult children with autism an opportunity to be recognized and receive the support they deserve. The event is open to all and the entire community is encouraged to join as Whole Spectrum Autism lights the pedestrian mall up in blue, mingle with other families, and enjoy some pizza.

“We believe in the power of community. We believe that education dissolves disparity. We believe that families that have been touched by autism deserve a voice,” Sherry told us. “We host and encourage autism-friendly and inclusive events, and we partner with organizations that serve individuals on the spectrum and their families so that together, we can build more equitable and inclusive communities.”

Community Coming Together

Whole Spectrum Autism raises autism awareness + acceptance by hosting inclusive, family-friendly events throughout the year. Founded by CEO + Board President Sherry Singh, the team is made up of Executive Director Rachel Sieg, Maria Pimenidis who supports all administration needs, and Jas Pinky Singh who supports marketing and the operating needs.

Sherry’s mission for  Whole Spectrum Autism is to build truly inclusive communities that welcome families and individuals like her adult 37 year old son who is on the spectrum and is non-verbal.

Sherry has told us that there are large numbers of families who are not able to participate in many community events because they are not set up to be safe spaces for those on the autism spectrum

Sherry continued, “Inclusivity is not just a matter of culture or race – it’s a matter of critically looking at how to enrich community engagement by serving the needs of many, not just the few. And, it requires the commitment of the many to make it a reality.”

Don’t forget to join in and show your support at this year’s Autism flag raising on April 4th + the Annual Light the Month Blue event happening on April 7th.
