Written by:

Just in time for the holiday season, downtown Jersey City is preparing to welcome The Ashford to town. After months of turning the once-upon-a-time Rainbow shop on Restaurant Row into a 17,000 square-foot, multi-level restaurant ready to house the public, The Ashford {located at 145 Newark Ave on the Pedestrian Mall in downtown Jersey City} is set to open its doors to JC and beyond for its grand opening New Year’s Eve. We’re giving you an inside look at all the levels and unique decor, below:

The Ashford is the latest venture of owner-slash-designer Jeff Lam, the man behind Chinatown’s successful restaurant Chinese Tuxedo with his partner Kenneth Caufield. Keep reading to get a sneak peek of the new restaurant space and to find out more about what to expect from The Ashford when it opens.

First slated to open this summer, The Ashford has been a long time coming. Located right in the heart of Newark Avenue pedestrian mall’s Restaurant Row, The Ashford will offer an unlimited range of dining and drinking options, as well as indoors and outdoors at the restaurant’s new rooftop space.

^The rooftop is HUGE, fyi. They will have a raw bar here when it’s fully functional.

What can guests expect in the way of food and drink? Co-owner and designer Kenneth Caulfield has spent over 25 years in hospitality, both in Ireland and the States. Working in conjunction with Caulfield is Executive Chef Giancarlo Borletti, Peruvian-born to Italian parents. Giancarlo promises to outfit The Ashford menu with a New American style, with nods to Jersey City’s diverse culture and of course, his own personal heritage. For those looking for a late-night bite, The Ashford kitchen will be open as late as 1:15AM.

Starters include beef skewers, featuring grilled potatoes and aji Amarillo sauce, kale salmon salad, and steak baguette bites. The menu will also include an array of burgers, whiskey and Korean BBQ, Anticucho, and Miso-glazed wings. Main dishes on the menu include beer-cilantro short ribs, creamy cajun pasta with parmesan-crusted chicken, and a fish of the day.

With craft beers and both a new and old-world wine list available, guests of The Ashford will be served cocktails by barmen with experience at NYC’s Macao Trading Company. Cocktail scene veterans Alex Ramirez and Luis Narvaez have created a cocktail menu of artisanal drinks.

Aside from the food and cocktails, the actual space has so much to offer. Jeff Lam, known for transforming an aging community opera house in Chinatown into the now innovative Chinese Tuxedo, has done something similar in the way of transforming this building next to the Grove Street PATH station.

The Ashford, which was a department store called Rainbow in a former life, promises the grandeur of 30-foot ceilings and a combination of artisanal details and dramatic large-scale boldness. The ambiance at The Ashford seeks a warm and retro vibe that will potentially remind restaurant-goers of a bygone era fit into a contemporary space. {Note: It’s HUGE!} With leather banquettes, gold and red accents, and oversized antique mirrors, the first floor of the Ashford will be warmly-lit with gold chandeliers and feature plush seating, perfect for large parties should you want to have a night out with friends.

The upper level of The Ashford, with spaces known as “The Parlor” and “Study,” features semi-private banquettes, exposed wood beams, broad tables of reclaimed wood, and lacquered iron railings. Expansive windows will expose a view of Newark Avenue below and the rooftop garden features an open-air kitchen, raw bar, and living trees and a garden area.

Two weeks after The Ashford’s opening, its sister bar and lounge, Six26 will open at 128 Christopher Columbus Drive. Six26 will be an LGBTQ+ bar with a swanky lounge, rooftop space, and a drink menu of cocktails and beers. Its namesake comes from June 26th, the day the gay marriage was legalized in the USA. We can’t wait to check it out!
