A Guide to 5Ks Happening in North Jersey This Fall 2021

Summer is almost over and while we’re sad to see it go, at least we have all things pumpkin (iced PSL in hand) to console us. Fall brings ideal temps, a crisp breeze, and remnants of sunny, summer days which all make for the perfect running conditions. Northern New Jersey has no shortage of races this season to enjoy and plenty of 5Ks for those who prefer a short + challenging run! Read on for all the 5K races happening in Northern NJ this season.

Hoboken Girl Spotlight

2021 NJ Tri-County Heart Walk 

The annual American Heart Association’s (AHA) NJ Tri-County Heart Walk is taking place on Saturday, October 2nd — and you can participate either virtually OR in-person at Overpeck County Park in Ridgefield Park at 9AM. Walkers and runners can choose to participate at the park or run their own path anywhere else – donations to the organization will help improve lives and spread awareness for stroke and heart attack victims, as well as Congenital Heart Defect survivors. One such survivor is our Hoboken Girl founder, Jennifer Tripucka.

2021 Virtual Lincoln Tunnel Challenge

The 2021 Virtual Lincoln Tunnel Challenge will take place September 1st-30th. This year, there are three different virtual racing options. Runners can choose between a 5K, 10K, and a Half Marathon. Complete your run in your own community as part of the virtual race. As a virtual runner, your registration includes the official 2021 LTC race shirt, an official race bib, and a custom LTC finisher medal. Between September 1 – 30, you will run or walk in your own community. The start time and course are up to you. All proceeds benefit Special Olympics New Jersey and thousands of registered athletes and Unified partners.

Run the Skyline 5K

Run the Skyline 5K will take place on September 22nd at Lincoln Harbor Park in Weehawken at 9PM with check-in starting at 8:30PM. There is a $10 suggested donation, which will support Social Tees NYC Animal Rescue. A post-run social event will take place at House of Que at 10PM. The Skyline Run Club wishes to remind runners that the event is an unsanctioned 5K through the streets of Weehawken + Hoboken. There are no street closures and runners will assume all risks. Please be aware of surroundings + pedestrians along the route. 

5K for Pizza

Sign up for the 2nd Annual 5K for Pizza + 1 Mile Run in Hoboken on September 25th. The race begins at 10AM. Race packets can be picked up beginning at 8AM. Virtual Registration ends September 24th. The flat course will take runners along the Hoboken waterfront, and conclude at the finish line festival, where all participants will get to enjoy free pizza from local pizzerias. The sponsors for this year’s pizza festival are Napoli’s, Impostos, H&S Giovanni’s, Benny Tudinos, Torna’s, Tony Boloney’s, and Basile’s. A 1-mile course will also be offered. Registrants will be eligible for a minimum of 3 slices. The event will also be USA Track & Field sanctioned and professionally chip-timed with live results. Overall winners will receive a free pair of shoes from JackRabbit Hoboken. The in-person race is $36.50 while the virtual 5k is $33.49. The 1-mile run is $28.

The 3K Walk Cancer Away Festival

Sign up for the 3K Walk Cancer Away Festival in Bayonne on September 26th. Proceeds will support Dr. Nancy Kemeny’s Colorectal Cancer Research Fund at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The walk will take place at the Stephen R. Gregg County Park. There will be live music, food trucks, games, and more. 

Breast Cancer Awareness 5K with 902 Brewing

Join 902 Brewing on October 2nd for a “5k-ish” course that starts and ends at this brewery. All participants will receive a free craft brew from 902 Brewing, a choice of a collector’s pint glass or seasonal swag item from the Brewery Running Series, access to giveaways, and much more. The race will support the Lori Sorrentino Hennessey Scholarship, a scholarship named in honor of a local community member who battled breast cancer. The scholarship supports a female student of Italian descent who is pursuing a degree in education.

The Jersey City Half 5K + 10K 

Run the Jersey City Half 5K + 10K on October 3rd this race will support Sustainable JC  who Citytri has partnered with for this Jersey City Fall Half Marathon and day of fundraising. The race begins at 9:30AM in Lincoln Park, JC.

Katie’s Krew 4th Annual Color Run 5K

Join Katie’s Krew Color Run on October 17th in support of The Valerie Fund, which aims to provide support for comprehensive children’s healthcare, specifically cancer, and blood disorders. The race will take place at 16th Street Park in Bayonne and begins at 11AM. There will be a DJ, music, food, face painting + more.

HoBOOken 5K Race

The HoBOOken 5K Race is the perfect way to get into the spooky spirit: the race winds its way through Hoboken and runners wear Halloween costumes. The race has virtual and in-person options this year and is scheduled to happen in-person on October 30th at 8AM + a virtual race option is available for completion October 30th-November 6th. When you sign-up for the HoBOOken 5K race, you are running for a good cause. Proceeds will support The Hoboken Shelter which shelters 50 people nightly, serving 530 meals daily and hosting 1,000 showers weekly for those in need.

Hispanic Heritage Month 5K

Sign up for the Hispanic Heritage Month 5K. Log solo miles at a time and date you choose between September 15th-October 17th. Latinos Run is teaming up with Fleet Feet and On Footwear to bring you a hybrid 5K with virtual and in-person fun run options. The group will host an in-person meet-up and celebration on September 26th at 8:30AM

Run for North Caldwell 5K + Color Mile 

The Run for North Caldwell will take place on a flat course on September 18th at 8AM. It will feature two events, a 5K and a 1-mile Color Run, with the net proceeds from each going to the improvement of North Caldwell’s athletic fields and recreational facilities. Register for either or both events, each of which is open to runners and walkers of all ages. Participants in the 5K can register for the Color Run for an additional $10 charge. The meeting location is Borough Hall, 141 Gould Avenue in North Caldwell.

Fleet Feet Montclair’s Supported Long Run

If you’re training for a Half or Full Marathon, Fleet Feet Montclair is here to help you get started. Join for a Supported Long Run on September 19th from 7AM to 11AM. There will be water stops, hydration, snacks, and some cheerleaders to support you along the way. 

Boys & Girls Club of Newark 5K to Wellness 

The Boys & Girls Club of Newark 5K to Wellness will take place on September 19th at Branch Brook Park in Newark at 8AM. The race is $30 and when you register for BGCN’s 5K to Wellness, you are supporting the efforts to raise funds to serve Newark’s youth and their families. Funds will provide more youth and families access to services like dental and eye care, stress management activities such as meditation, as well as crisis support to address mental and behavioral health challenges. You will receive a t-shirt and a 5K run/walk finisher medal. The race will take place on a USATF certified course and is sanctioned. 

The Most Good 5K Sponsored by The Salvation Army

The Salvation Army Montclair Citadel will host The Most Good 5K September 25th-27th and it will be a virtual race, as of right now. Organizers will announce if the race will also take place in person. When you sign up for the race, your money will help serve 50-60 lunches each Monday-Wednesday, provide safe, clean emergency shelter for families, a place for the homeless to shower, provide the toiletries and a change of clothes, provide case management for the homeless, and homeless prevention services to those needing assistance to stabilize their housing and more.

10th Annual 4 Miler

Saturday, October 2nd 

Run the 10th Annual 4Miler on Saturday, Ocotber 2nd at Garret Mountain in Woodland Park, where all the proceeds directly support St. Joseph’s children’s hospital, specifically the Child Life Department. Partake in a walk/run to raise money for children and their families who are under the hospital’s care. The cost to participate is $25 for a 4 mile run (USA Track and Field Certified) or 1.5 mile walk and $5 for a kids dash.

Sea Turtle Race 5k + Family Fun Walk

The 3rd Annual Montclair Sea Turtle Race Run will take place on October 2nd at Orange Reservoir, 9 Cherry Lane in West Orange. The race will travel on a USATF certified course around the Orange Reservoir in West Orange. This year’s race is nicknamed the “Cold Stun Run” to bring awareness to the sick sea turtles that are cold-stunned from failing to migrate south before the temperature becomes too cold. The 5K race will start at 8:30AM with a 1.7 mile Family Fun Walk starting at 8:35AM. Refreshments will be available after the race at Clipper Pavilion. Discounted admission to the Turtle Back Zoo will be available to participants that present their race IDs at the zoo admission ticket booth. 

38th Annual Montclair Run

The 38th Annual Montclair Run will take place on October 9th at 8AM at the YMCA in Montclair, located at 25 Park Street. This year, participants are encouraged to wear costumes and awards will be given to the best ones. The race will consist of a 10K as well as a 2-mile fun run/walk. The 10K is now a Grand Prix as well as a USATF Sanctioned Event on a Certified Course.

5K Spirit Run

The 5K Spirit Run is set to happen in person on October 30th at 8AM. The course begins and ends on The Green on Broad Street across from Sacred Heart Church in Bloomfield. Runners and walkers are welcome to participate in the 5K race that will benefit the historic Mt. Olivet Cemetery on Cottage Place in Bloomfield. The 5K course is USATF-NJ sanctioned and certified.

NYCRUNS Ladies First Half Marathon & 5K

The NYCRUNS Ladies First Half Marathon + 5K will take place on September 18th at 8AM at Shore Road Park Pier in Brooklyn. The race was created for those who identify as women, but men can join in too. Awards will be given to ladies only. The in-person option offers a flat course around the southern edge of Brooklyn. Runners will go under the Verrazzano Bridge and see the Manhattan skyline from across the harbor. For the virtual option, you can run or walk anywhere you want, including a treadmill. Participants can track miles any way they want and with any device they want. Participants must log their miles and submit their results by December 31, 2021.

Prospect Park Half Marathon

The Prospect Park Half Marathon will take place on September 19th at 8AM. This challenging yet scenic course will be 1 loop of the northern half of the course and 3 full loops of Prospect Park. The race start + finish as well as registration and post-race activities will all be held on Center Drive closest to the 16th Street and Prospect Park Southwest entrance to the park. After the race, there will be food, entertainment, games and more.

2021 Tunnels to Towers 5K Run + Walk NYC

The 2021 Tunnels to Towers 5K Run + Walk NYC will take place on September 26th at 9:30AM in Brooklyn. The race will begin at 1 Beard Street. The Tunnel to Towers 5K Run + Walk in New York is held each year on the last Sunday of September. The event symbolizes Stephen Siller’s final footsteps from the foot of the Battery Tunnel to the Twin Towers and pays homage to the 343 FDNY firefighters, 71 law enforcement officers, and thousands of civilians who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. Proceeds from the event support the Tunnel to Towers Foundation programs, including those benefiting first responders, and severely injured service members.
