If you’ve ever been to Mathews Food & Drink in Jersey City, you know that the owners know a thing or two about fresh local ingredients, great food, and amazing drinks. White Star Bar {located at 230 Brunswick Street and with a location at 179 Warren} is no exception to this, as the restaurant/bars are serving up some delish eats by the same owners as Mathews. And whether you want brunch, lunch, dinner, or simply just want to stop by for a burger {because they’re pretty damn good here}, White Star Bar is your go-to. Check out our visit to the Brunswick Street location of this Jersey City bar and restaurant:
The Vibe
At White Star Bar, the vibe is casual and Cheers-like: the servers know many customers by name, and somehow you feel right at home in this place, even if you’re not from the neighborhood. The spacious bar with TVs at either end is ideal for a casual drink or bite during the game. However, since outdoor dining is currently the only dine-in option, there are plenty of tables outside on their full patio.

Burgers + Beyond
The restaurant uses Pat LaFrieda meat, bread from the famed Balthazar, and always-fresh, local veggies. White Star Bar is really known for their burgers, and they pride themselves on serving JC’s best burger. The Brunswick Street location’s dinner menu features six craft burgers: White Star Burger, Double Burger Double Cheese, Prime Dry Aged Burger {caramelized onions, anyone?!}, Bacon Cheese Burger, Morning Glory {think: breakfast sammy meets burger}, a Veggie Burger with chipotle mayo and avocado, a Turkey Burger, and last but not least, the Truffle Burger {need we say more?}.

Aside from burgers, White Star Bar’s dinner menu offers a variety of starters, sandwiches, entrees, salads, and sides. Some stand-outs include the customizable mac and cheese {with the option to add any of the following: smoked Applewood bacon, chorizo, wild mushroom and truffle oil, or buffalo chicken and blue cheese…whaaatt}, the pulled pork grilled cheese, blackened shrimp wrap, and chipotle crispy chicken salad. White Star Bar also has some exciting, flavorful vegetarian options such as the mushroom tacos, spaghetti squash {with wild mushrooms, kale, Brussels sprouts, tomato, Cotija, and fresh herbs}, and a Portobello sandwich. Did we mention they have parmesan truffle fries?!

If you’re more of a brunch person, it’s served every Saturday and Sunday from 11:00AM till 4:00PM — perfect for those who may need to sleep in {PS: This is a judgement-free zone, in case you were wondering}. They make a killer bloody, a gorg mimosa, and the brunch menu features more than just your usual eggs benedict and avocado toast — check out their chorizo kale hash, humongous and truly perfect breakfast burrito, a Brie omelet {drooool}, and guacamole toast with a fried egg on top.
